The UK 100 is based on the FTSE 100 index, which is a market capitalization benchmark for the UK's top 100 companies. Finance, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods are among the industries represented in the FTSE. The FTSE 100 index is widely regarded as an accurate representation of the UK economy because of its diversity and large number of stocks. BP, GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, British American Tobacco, and HSBC are the largest FTSE 100 companies by market capitalization. Due to their longevity on the UK's premier stock market, blue-chip stocks are commonly referred to as such.
